Fellowships

Undergraduate and Graduate Students of the Humanities Department are eligible for the following fellowships and prizes.

(I) Edward B. Kaufmann Scholarship for Humanities MA students

The Kaufmann Scholarship provides several scholarships for SFSU graduate students currently pursuing an M.A. degree in the Humanities Department.

US citizens, permanent residents, and international students may apply. Fall 2008 graduates are not eligible. Applicants must be enrolled at SFSU in at least three units at the time of application (Fall 2008) and at least three units at the time of receipt (Spring 2009) of the award. Applicants must have already completed at least 6 units toward the Humanities M.A. degree by the time of application, and must have a minimum 3.0 GPA.

Amount of award: $2000 or more according to need.

Please note that federal and state regulations require that any scholarship, award, prize, or loan must be coordinated with the student’s financial aid awards.

Applications are usually due in early November.

(II) Edward B. Kaufmann Scholarship for Humanities BA students

The Kaufmann Scholarship provides two scholarships for SFSU undergraduates currently pursuing a B.A. degree with a major in the Humanities Department.

US citizens, permanent residents, and international students may apply. Seniors graduating in Fall 2008 and previous recipients of this award are not eligible. Applicants must be enrolled at SFSU at least half time (six units) at the time of application (Fall 2008) and six units at the time of receipt (Spring 2009) of the award. Applicants must have already completed at least six units toward the Humanities B.A. degree at the time of application, and must have a minimum 3.0 GPA.

Amount of award: $2000 or more according to need.

(III) The Evans-Hsu-Kauffman Scholarship

Established in honor of Professors Matthew Evans, Kai-yu Hsu, and Herb Kauffman, provides one or more scholarships for SFSU undergraduates currently pursuing a B.A. degree with a major in the College of Humanities. The scholarship award will be $1,500.

Applications are usually due in early April.

(IV) The Carolyn Irene Howard Memorial Scholarship

For undergraduate and graduate students provides a $500.00 award. Applications are usually due in mid-November.

(V) The Judith Anne Ott Scholarship

For graduate students provides a $500 award. Applications are due in mid-November.

(VI) The Morrissey-Andersen Prize

The Morrissey-Andersen Prize is a yearly prize for the best graduate paper. It was endowed by two of our emeritus faculty, Professor Eleanor Morrissey and Professor Stan Andersen. The prize standards and application procedures are normally posted early in the Spring term and the winner is announced at the end of the Spring term.
